Chapter 20

Toby was watching the news from Travers TV. Rick’s team of reporters in Washington had beaten other media groups to the news on the Supreme Court. He suspected the studio lead was a CGI-constructed reporter, who looked very similar to Bronwyn.

“This is Rebecca Smith with the latest news from Washington DC. Following a major exposé by Darwin Euler, the SI presidential candidate, we can announce Chief Justice Gallagher today tendered his resignation from the Supreme Court. His press release identifies private family interests and related issues as the basis for his resignation. He will leave office at the end of the month, some weeks before Darwin’s case is scheduled. It’s extremely rare for Supreme Court justices to resign; they have lifetime appointments and remain in place for as long as they are able. We’ll cross to our DC reporter. Deanna, what’s the latest?”

“Good afternoon, Rebecca. You might recall Darwin provided some very relevant details of the Chief Justice’s business affairs and suggested he wouldn’t be able to approach the hearing with an unbiased view. While the Chief Justice initially vehemently denied Darwin’s claims, subsequent investigations confirmed the Gallagher family’s business was indeed managed by the chief justice. He was responsible for the horrendous treatment of humanoid bots. We have a clip of their working conditions.”

A short video showed hundreds of bots at assembly stations. The bots, their legs removed, were locked in place.

“As you can see, this report wasn’t only embarrassing for the chief justice, it was evidence of illegal activities, and New York State prosecutors are preparing legal action targeting Robert Gallagher as the effective owner and manager. Rebecca.”

“Thank you, Deanna. We’ve heard from other sources that two other justices are considering recusing themselves from any involvement in Darwin’s case and we have whispers of another pending resignation. We’ll update you when we have further details. In other news, a well-known Washington attorney, Mallory Jezebiah Jones, has resigned from Jones, Jones, and Dryer, one of Washington’s top law firms. No reason for his departure has been communicated to the press. Remember, Jones was the primary attorney in this case against Darwin and identified as a major shareholder in a Chinese-based manufacturer of sex bots. We’ll have a detailed report on Jones, his investments, and his utilization of his company’s products, tomorrow evening. Now, in news just in from Florida—”

Billie groaned and raised her head. “You’re up far too early.”

Toby switched off the television set. “Catching up on the legal news. Darwin’s due here in an hour or so. Remember, we’re reviewing the approach of his attorneys with Charles Henderson. You’re welcome to sit in, if you wish. I’m sure Darwin won’t object.”

Billie yawned. “Oh, that’s right. No, I have some other things to do while we’re in DC. Also, Bronwyn and I want to spend some time catching up with Aerial, to see if she is comfortable. She’s all by herself in England.”

“Good. Our new comms satellites should be in place; they’ll make communications a lot easier. Let me know if she wants anything.
